What Causes Dry Eyes

Healthy tears are made of three layers: oil, water, and mucus. If one layer is out of balance, your eyes may feel gritty, burn, water excessively, or blur.

Factors that can cause or worsen dry eye:

  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): Oil glands in the eyelids get blocked, so tears evaporate too quickly.

  • Aging & Hormones: Tear production slows with age, especially around menopause.

  • Environment & Lifestyle: Wind, air conditioning, heating, and extended screen use reduce blinking and dry out eyes.

  • Contacts & Eye Surgery: These can temporarily or permanently affect tear film balance.

  • Medications & Health Conditions: Some prescriptions and autoimmune diseases (like Sjögren’s or thyroid disease) interfere with tear production.
